Halliday Wine Companion - Mike Bennie
A bright and spritely red wine, albeit very simple. Lots of strawberry jam, raspberry lollies and sweet spice with tangy-crisp tannins and a splash of blood orange finishing things off, though perhaps a dash of zingy, lemony acidity is the lasting impression. A bit edgy, but feels mostly competent as an expression of the variety.

The Real Review - Houn Hooke
Deep-ish red-purple with pungent aromas of mint, herbs, blackberry and eucalyptus, the palate full bodied and bright with layers of powdery tannins and medium length. Fresh acidity completes the picture. Beautifully bright and fruity, yet finishes dry & savoury

  • Background

"Single Suitcase" collection pays tribute to the many immigrants who arrived in Australia during the 1950s with just a single suitcase and dreams of building a better life.

Bringing more than just their dreams in hand, these immigrants carried their deep viticultural traditions and passionate love of table wine, profoundly shaping Australia's diverse wine landscape and the varietals we cherish today.

  • Winemaking

Sicily’s signature red was first planted here in the late 1990s and has steadily built a loyal following. In its homeland Nero can be rich, powerful and deeply savoury thanks to the volcanic soils of the island. It has adapted well to the Australian climate. This grape is hardy in the vineyard and thrives where others struggle. Our terroir draws out a juicier, more vibrant expression that is utterly lip-smacking.

  • Tasting Notes

Incredible black and purple fruit characters fly out of the glass, enticing you to have another sip. Like many Volcanic varieties, the wine tempts you in with its rich and decadent bouquet before opening up to reveal its bright and fresh palate loaded with crunchy blackberries, fresh raspberries and beautifully balanced tannins.

  • Peak Drinking / Cellaring Potential

Drink now of medium term cellaring, 3-5 years.

  • Serving Temperature

    14-16° C

  • Food Matches

Nero’s juicy red fruit softens tomato acidity, while its gentle tannins integrate beautifully with charred roasted or BBQ dishes. The medium body means it’s just as comfortable with lighter meals as it is with richer fare.
